The 2016 Councillor Election at Shafton Primary Academy

Early this morning I was walking by The Shafton Primary Academy. Or as it used to be called, Shafton Junior and Infants School. This was the school where my daughter, now 28 years old, used to go. I can’t even tell you the amount of sports days, parents evenings and school plays I attended at the school over the years, and I always feel a sense of nostalgia whenever I walk by.

The 2016 Councillor Election at Shafton Primary Academy

With that in mind, I decided to take my camera out on my early morning walk today and took a photograph of the school in the semi-dark. I loved how beautiful the blue sky looked, along with wispy clouds floating by in the distance and I knew I could get a surreal, yet engaging shot. As the sun was behind the school building, it made the building appear darker, so I decided to make the school look like it had been painted rather than photographed.

Today, the school has been abuzz with our community stopping by to vote in the 2016 Election of Councillor to the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council North, and the Election of the Police and the Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire Police areas. The classroom that my daughter once sat in learning has been temporarily turned into a polling station, and the propaganda vehicles crawl past every once in a while drawing everybody’s attention to the vote. This shot perfectly symbolises the calm before the rush today. A moment of peace captured in gorgeous technicolour. The school I once used to know.

Don’t forget, you can stop by to vote up until 10pm tonight. Make your voice count.
