John’s Diary: Italy, Chihuahuas and Victoria’s Secret

Hello to all of our Divers Photography readers and welcome to the first instalment of ‘John’s Diary’ posts. This is my little space of the blog where I talk about what I’ve been up to each week both in the business and personally. I always think it’s lovely to be able to read a blog and really get a sense of the person behind it which is why I have decided to share a little piece of my life with you.

As many of you know, I run my photography business with Susan, my beautiful wife of 29 years. My daughter Rachael is also involved as our in-house makeup artist and stylist, and I couldn’t forget to mention our little dog Lily – the star of the show! We have had Lily for three amazing years now and she means the absolute world to all of us. Rachael has been highly allergic to dogs (all animals actually) since she was born so we weren’t able to have a dog while she was growing up – it was all she ever asked for on birthdays or at christmas and we felt so terrible that she couldn’t have a dog of her own. Then one day a miracle happened when Rachael found a dog at a nearby lake and brought it home to care for until the dog warden could collect it the next day. We were all amazed to find that Rachael wasn’t allergic to the little dog which was a cross between a long-haired Chihuahua and a Jack Russell. We agreed we would adopt the dog if the owners didn’t come forward and we were all devastated when a few days later, the dog was claimed. Rachael broke her heart and so we decided that we would buy a small long-haired Chihuahua for her. It was love at first sight when we first saw Lily and we just had to bring her home, so here we are three happy years down the line with our beautiful, mischievous little Lily-Lou. We wouldn’t change her for the world.

Anyway, this week has been a busy one so far as Susan and I prepare to take a trip to beautiful Varenna at the end of this month where we will be photographing Matt and Lauren’s wedding. We decided to make a little holiday out of our trip so we will be spending a week in the glorious surroundings of Lake Como. Myself and Susan are really looking forward to the trip – as any busy self-employed photographer knows, the chance to holiday away does not come often and this will be our first holiday in many years! Little Lily will be staying home with Rachael while we are away – although I am sure they’d much rather be coming with us! I’ve spent a lot of this week preparing the equipment that we will need to take and ensuring that our luggage is under the weight requirements for the plane. We have had to order in a few items of portable equipment to save our space and allowance and I think we are almost ready to go.

Yesterday we spent the day taking a look around the Trafford Centre in Manchester where we intended to buy a few holiday clothes for our trip to Italy. We were really pleased to note that Victoria’s Secret was due to open the same day at 10am and we couldn’t resist taking a look inside at the beautiful lingerie. As we shoot Boudoir2Burlesque packages often, we like to make sure our studio is kept stocked up on pretty lingerie sets, basques and accessories for our lovely clients to choose from if they wish. We usually like to covet Agent Provocateur or Boux Avenue but have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Victoria’s Secret so that we could pick out a few special pieces. We were really impressed with the store and the staff were absolutely wonderful. We even brought home a bottle of their Bombshell perfume for Rachael which she was thrilled with.

We love to stock pretty sets such as this one from Boux Avenue that our gorgeous model Emma wears. Doesn’t she have the look of Cheryl Cole?!

That’s pretty much all for this week, but I’ll look forward to catching up with you all again next week and chatting about what’s been going on in the world of Divers Photography!
